Jesus-centered Purpose

28 07 2008

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”

Purpose is a buzzword isn’t it? It’s made Rick Warren a best selling author and has spawned a hundred knock-off writers, too. The Dalli Lama says that the purpose of life is the pursuit of happiness. Renowned psychiatrist Victor Frankl’s premise is that ‘man’s search for meaning’ is the primary motivation of his life.

Every philosophy leans on purpose for an explanation of some sort…

We believe that God’s purpose is what is important, and that He’s established particular people, places and things to accomplish His purpose.

Have you considered your role in His purpose? May our plans be according to His will, and only His will…

I read a scripture yesterday that I think is relevant to your post. The scripture is found in Psalm 127.

Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. Psalm 127:1

I admitted recently that I lack passion–to say that with many distractions I find it difficult to focus on any one thing (purpose). However, that said, I have, I believe, a Christ given direction. The distractions have began to subside and priorities are falling into place.
Point; It’s hard to know and/or appreciate purpose without passion.

Rande, I echo that thought and pose this question to us all. As individuals, what do you believe or what has God revealed to you, to be His purpose for you in His plans?

Does Jason echo Randes thought?
For quite some time the Lord has given me a heart for the poor. My problem was/is I didn’t know how or what to do. I didn’t even know what questions to ask nor who to ask them. So I began to do some research and encountered someone familiar with hands-on ministry. I believe I’m headed in the right direction. In fact, tomorrow I will be in Glendora to experience and observe first hand – that said, do pray that my heart is prepared to absorb what it is the lord wants of me!

Hello gents.
I hear what you’re saying, John. Distractions abound – both by my own doing and because our enemy excels in providing ample opportunity to be involved in lesser things…

The Amplified Bible says the same verse (Proverbs 19:21) this way: “Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.”

So, my plan is to be immersed in His purpose. His purpose for me? Well, a part of this is between Him and me, and is something that I have been in prayer over for some time. But I will say that I believe the Lord’s purpose for me is to be at His disposal. Sort of Isaiah like (“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”).

For me this means that I need to learn to stay on track – to follow the Lord’s guidance where He leads – and it also means learning to say “No” to things I’m not called to – no matter how worthy the cause.

Make sense?

Am praying for you John!

I like the concept of being able to say , “no”. I’m even considering releasing some of the ministries I’m currently involved so to pursue the Lords purpose – to be certain I’m not fulfilling someone elses purpose.

Makes sense!

As long as you’re not talking about the children’s ministry, I think you’re right John! (Just kidding).
